Background of the Study:
Internal democracy within political parties is fundamental to ensuring transparency, accountability, and effective governance at the local level. In Ovia North-East, the internal dynamics of political parties have increasingly become a focal point, as members demand more participatory decision-making processes (Ighodalo, 2024). Evidence suggests that where internal party democracy is robust, local governance tends to be more responsive and inclusive (Obi, 2023). Conversely, autocratic practices within party structures often result in nepotism, factionalism, and poor policy implementation. Historical analyses indicate that the internal organization of political parties can significantly influence the quality of local leadership and service delivery (Akintayo, 2023). In the context of Ovia North-East, an examination of party internal democracy is crucial, as it impacts candidate selection, policy formulation, and ultimately, governance outcomes. This study critically assesses the level of internal democracy in political parties and explores its correlation with effective local governance practices (Oluwole, 2024).
Statement of the Problem:
A lack of internal democracy within political parties in Ovia North-East has led to centralized decision-making and a disconnect between party leadership and grassroots members. This centralization adversely affects policy formulation and local governance, contributing to inefficiencies and reduced public trust (Akintayo, 2023). The study aims to explore how internal party dynamics impede or promote effective local governance (Ighodalo, 2024).
